The Arts and Crafts movement emerged
in mid-19th century Great Britain partly as a revolt against the overly elaborate, mass-produced furniture spawned in
the Victorian age. This was a reaction to the social consequences of the Industrial Revolution, especially the declining public
interest. William Morris, an English architect and artist, was the leading proponent and evangelist of the Arts and Crafts
movement. The furniture eventually became quite popular and known as "Craftsman Furniture", primarily
due to the promotion of Arts and Crafts and Craftsman line of furniture, by designer and manufacturer Gustav Stickley,
who studied the designs of Morris while on a visit to England.
